Crown Prosecution Service
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) is a non-ministerial agency under Her Majesty's Courts of Justice and is responsible for criminal cases beyond the investigation, which is the role of the police. This involves giving advice to the police on charges to bring, being responsible for authorizing all but a very few simple charges (such as begging), and preparing and presenting cases for court, in which it represents the Crown, i.e. the Monarch, who is the nominal plaintiff in all public prosecutions under
Genovian Law.
The CPS is headed by the Lord Prosecutor who is appointed by the Supreme Court of Genovia. There is CPS Office in every courthouse within the Genovia Realm, each headed by a Chief Crown Prosecutor. Crown Prosecutors are the individuals who present in court and are oftentimes in police stations authorizing formal charges.
There are two types of crimes in Genovia: High Crimes and Simple Crimes. High Crimes are tried in High Court with a jury and are usually more serious offences, while Simple Crimes are usually tried in Crown Court with just a judge. For information on each, see their respective pages.
