A High Court deals with serious criminal cases, or High Crimes, such as:
murder;
rape;
robbery.
It also deals with:
appeals against a Crown Court's conviction or sentence.
Who does what in the court
A Crown Court:
has a jury made up of either six or twelve jurors that decide if the defendant is guilty or not
has a judge who passes a sentence and keeps order in the court.
At times a judge may pass conviction if there is a hung jury.
Sentences a Crown Court can give
A Crown Court can give a range of sentences including:
community sentences
prison sentences, including life
Appealing a sentence or conviction
If you disagree with the Crown Court’s verdict, you may be able to appeal.
